Direct Rail Services are a publicly-owned freight operating company, owned by the government's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority branch. The company was initially founded to haul nuclear trains, but have since diversified. As such, they are one of only two publicly-owned rail operators in the United Kingdom, along with NI Railways. They were founded in 1995.
Direct Rail Services currently operates a fleet of 8 Class 20 diesel locomotives, 31 Class 37 diesel locomotives, 1 Class 47 diesel locomotive, 21 Class 57 diesel locomotives, 19 Class 66 diesel locomotives and 25 Class 68 diesel locomotives. An additional 7 Class 68 diesel locomotives and 10 Class 88 electro-diesel locomotives are currently on order.
