Discussion relating to the Tyne & Wear Metro.
The Tyne & Wear Metro is a rapid transit commuter rail system located in the Tyne & Wear region, opened in 1980. There are 60 stations on the network, served using a fleet of 90 two-carriage "MetroCars", built by Metro-Cammell between 1975 and 1981 and classified under TOPS as Class 994. The MetroCars are numbered 4001-4090, or 994001-994090 under TOPS.
Services are operated along two lines; the Green Line from Newcastle Airport to South Hylton, and the Yellow Line from St. James to South Shields. The Metro runs underground through central Newcastle and also serves the nearby city of Sunderland. Part of the Metro track is shared with the National Rail system.
The Tyne & Wear Metro is currently operated by Arriva, under concession from the local passenger transport executive, Nexus.
